Creve Coeur Location Questioned

Beardstown, IL – Two Western Illinois men believe LaSalle's Fort Creve Coeur was not at Peoria, but near Beardstown. Marty Fischer of Macomb and his brother Bruce of Beardstown began their investigation after a historian suggested the site east of Quincy. Fischer says the lattitude matches what's in LaSalle's Journals. He also says the width of the river matches period descriptions of the width of the Illinois near Beardstown and before dams altered the shape of the river. In addition, he says travel times from other Illinois river sites more closely match to Beardstown than Peoria. Fischer says archeologists from the Illinois State Museum will begin an investigation to determine whether a full-scale dig will be warranted.
