County Hires Architectural Firm For Jail Rehab

Fort Madison, IA – Some questions surround the hiring of an architectural firm to work on renovations to the Lee County Jail. For $6500, the Nebraska-based firm will generate a rough floor plan that the county can use to develop a cost estimate for the jail expansion project. The company would also be in line to earn several hundred thousand dollars for final architectural designs if voters agree to borrow the money to upgrade the jail. Several supervisors expressed concerns since there was no public hearing on the matter and that the county's jail committee selected the firm, instead of the full board doing so. Chairman Larry Kruse, who serves on the jail committee, says the public will have a say. Kruse says a date for a special election has not been set.
