County Board Takes No Action on Refunds

Macomb, IL – The McDonough County Board took no action on refunds to residents who said they overpaid their property taxes this year. Residents say they should have received the owner-occupied tax exemption, which can be worth up to $500. A committee examined 186 records, and issued certificates of error for eleven of them. Some of the taxpayers pointed out that at last month's board meeting, residents passed a resolution directing that refunds be paid and that the county issue an apology. However, Board Chairman Bob Harwick says that would be against state statutes. Afterward, some residents were talking filing a class action suit against the county. That would not be expected until next month.
