Contested Race in Galesburg's First Ward

The election to represent northeast portions of Galesburg features a two-term incumbent opposed by a political newcomer.  First Ward Alderman Ken Goad is being challenged by Angela Bastian.

Goad feels the city will continue dealing with economic troubles in the next few years.  He said he would consider reducing city employee salaries and benefits to save money.  He would also consider cutting back on infrastructure projects, though he would like to complete the East Main Street underpass.

In addition, Goad would like to make Galesburg more welcoming for businesses.

“We need to put our best foot forward to all businesses. So that when they look around for a place to put a new business that we are welcoming, that we are easy to work with, and we are cooperative. And that we are proud of Galesburg,” Goad said.

He said that can be done by amending ordinances to make it easier on businesses and developers.

Goad's opponent, Angela Bastian, is running for office for the first time.

Bastian said she would take an “all of the above” approach to bringing jobs to Galesburg with any industry willing to come to the city.

She also believes the city will experience economic troubles, but wants to listen to leaders at City Hall about what could be trimmed from the budget.

“What I would be doing is looking towards our department heads and city leaders, and looking at their recommendations, and how those affect the citizens of Galesburg.  And making sure that there’s a balance in where we’re taking or what we’re cutting,” Bastian said.

Bastian said she would also consider new fees or tax increases as part of looking at all options to balancing the city’s budget.  But she said the city would have to make the case for why it needs the increases.

Election Day is April 7.
