Congressional Hopefuls Ask for Nomination

Canton, IL – Democrats in west-central Illinois are still working to choose a candidate to replace retiring Congressman Lane Evans. Six hopefuls touted their credentials during a forum at Spoon River College in Canton. They are State Senator John Sullivan of Rushville, State Representative Mike Boland of East Moline, Macon County Auditor Amy Stockwell, Rock Island Mayor Mark Schwiebert, Congressional aide Phil Hare, and high school teacher Rob Mellon. This was the second of three forums. After the final one, elected precinct committeemen will be asked to nominate candidates. The names of those nominated will appear on a ballot that will be sent to precinct committeemen, who will have 15 days to return it. The party hopes to announce its nominee by the second or third week of next month. That person will face Republican Andrea Zinga in the fall election.
