Communicating After A Health Crisis

Macomb, IL – A personal crisis inspired an expert on speech communication to focus on a health-related issue. Dr. Daena Goldsmith is a professor at the University of Illinois. Her area of research interest is communication in personal relationships. Goldsmith's current focus is on how couples communicate after a healthcare crisis. She developed the idea after her father suffered a heart attack about 13 years ago. Goldsmith says she sometimes found herself speechless as she struggled to understand how to help someone while also respecting his ability to make his own decisions. Goldsmith visited Macomb's campus on Monday and delivered the Department of Communication's 16th annual Thompson Lecture. She also visited the Tri States Public Radio studios for a conversation with News Director Rich Egger. You can listen to the entire interview by clicking on the audio button above.
