Committee Suggests Some Pay Hikes

Macomb, lL – The McDonough County Board has suggested a three percent pay hike for elected officers, such as the sheriff and circuit clerk. Board Chairman Bob Harwick says the committee should try for the same percentage for other county employees. Harwick says it will be a difficult budget next year. Farmland is losing about 15 percent of its value, trimming county income. However, he says some businesses will be going onto the tax rolls after being exempt due to enterprise zone tax breaks. Harwick says he'd be happy if the income stayed about the same as it did last year. The pay hikes for elected officers must be approved by this month's meeting to take effect Dec. 1. Salary increases for county employees will be discussed at future budget meetings.
