City Prepares for Higher Utility Rates

Macomb, IL – As the City of Macomb gets ready to work on its next budget, it's planning to deal with an increase of up to 60% in its utility bills. Electric rates will spike because a 10-year freeze on them has expired and state lawmakers have failed to take action to prevent increases. Mayor Mick Wisslead says the city might need to look at generating more revenue, perhaps through an increase in water and sewer rates. He says the city anticipated some of the hike in electric rates when crafting the current budget. He also says the city will look for ways to trim its use of electricity. Wisslead says the city will not ask to spread the electric rate increase over three years because of the interest that would be charged.
