City Might Halt Atrazine Program

Carthage, IL – In the late 1990s, Carthage's reservoir had high levels of the herbicide Atrazine. They city made payments of up to $8 per acre to help farmers use other chemicals instead. Now Mayor James Nightingale says testing by a chemical firm shows low levels of Atrazine, and the firm will cease monthly testing and go to yearly. Nightingale says the program will be discussed with landowners and famers next week. The city had spent up to $6,000 yearly to help the farmers use more expensive weedkillers on their corn.
