Macomb, IL – A recommendation is forthcoming about a Macomb intersection that some residents consider dangerous.
Right now, there are no stop signs on Grant Street where it intersects with Randolph/Maple Streets. But drivers on those side streets do have to stop.
Some local residents say traffic can pile up during certain times of the day as drivers wait to turn on to or cross Grant. Parent Jamie Lane says it can be especially tough for pedestrians to cross Grant.
Lane collected more than 100 signatures on a petition asking for stop signs on Grant. The issue was then referred to the city council's Public Safety Committee.
Second Ward Alderman Ed Lavin, who serves on the committee, says the panel spent the past few months reviewing traffic counts and accident reports. He says members also talked to the police department and school district about the intersection.
Lavin says the committee will share its findings during the next Committee of the Whole meeting on January 11.
"We will be presenting a recommendation but I'm not going to share it now," said Lavin following the city council's January 4 meeting. "It wouldn't be fair to the people that would like to respond. So we will be making a recommendation next Monday."
Lavin says the committee sent letters to 20% of the people who signed the petitions, asking for their thoughts regarding the intersection. He says just four were returned.
