Carthage Gets Housing Rehab Funds

Carthage, IL – A $380,000 housing rehabilitation grant will upgrade a dozen Carthage homes. Gary Zeigler of the Western Illinois Regional Council says this is the first time Carthage has applied for this type of housing grant. He says city leaders cited expected growth from the extension of Route 336 as part of the reason they sought the program. Zeigler says the goal is to bring owner-occupied homes up to building code standards. Work usually covers roofing, the plumbing and electrical systems and lead paint sealing or removal. It can also include heating systems. He says the work does not include cosmetic items such as painting or cabinetry. Work on the first homes chosen has begun. The project should be complete by the end of next summer.
