Canton, MO Opens Trail
Canton, MO wants to take advantage of its proximity to the Mississippi River.
Local leaders has “officially” opened the Canton Levee Trail and Scenic Overlook, even though the public has been using it for a while.
The trail is a 2,000 foot long stretch of concrete sidewalk on top of the portion of the earthen levee near the city’s downtown district.
Tourism Commission Co-Chair Robin Jarvis says this project has been in the works for years.
She hopes the view of the river from the trail makes it a destination point.
“Basically, anyone who wants a pretty view, this is a great place for that,” says Jarvis. “There is always something going on the (Mississippi) River, barge traffic coming through, the ferry running all of the time. There is always something to look at.”
Jarvis says the next step for the Canton Tourism Commission is to build an observation tower along the trail, which is handicapped accessible.
The project cost about $155,000. The money came from local hotel-motel tax revenue and from the Missouri Department of Transportation.
