Burlington Schools to Aid Renovations

The Burlington School District is moving ahead with its share of the proposed $3.4-million renovation of Bracewell Stadium, which is home to multiple middle and high school teams.

The Purple & Grey Foundation is the booster club for the district's athletics programs.

It brought the idea to the school board in September.  The panel approved the overall concept, knowing it would be able to weigh in on individual projects.

The foundation asked the school district to participate, which the school board has agreed to do.

Superintendent Jane Evans says the district will handle improvements to the press box, the concession area and the restrooms.

"That is something that needs to be addressed right away," says Evans, "so when we met with the Purple & Grey Foundation, they thought it would be wonderful if the district could proceed with that."

Evans says the cost of these projects is not known at this time as engineering work must still be completed.

She says the goal is for construction to begin in the spring.

The district has pledged up to 25% of the cost of the total project, using money it sat aside during a bond issue from several years ago.

The renovation project also calls for the installation of a new artificial playing surface and additional parking.

Local fundraising will be required for the project to proceed.
