Board Wants More Corporate Farm Information

Oquawka, IL – Henderson County board members believe the state should be more forthcoming about possible corporate agriculture livestock facilities. Chairman Marty Lafary says he asked for a briefing from agriculture department staffers after he heard that up to three such farms might locate in the county. He says he learned that the Department of Agriculture has the final say on permitting such an operation. Lafary believes the state should notify local governents much earlier in the permitting process. He says now, much of an application has already been completed and studied by the state before nearby residents or local units of government are notified.
