Macomb, IL – At least one supporter of Macomb's proposed bike route also has some concerns about it.
Travis Gage lives on East Washington, which will be part of the bike path. Gage told aldermen this week there a few problems in his neighborhood that could raise safety issues for bicyclists.
"I would really like something to be done about the speeding, about the nuisances," said Gage. "I have a neighbor who backs out of his driveway and backs all the way down East Washington until he gets to Bonham and then pulls out on Bonham."
City staff said they would share the concerns with the police department. Sixth Ward Alderman Tim Lobdell also said the bike route might slow down drivers because there will only be one lane for vehicles. Right now there are two.
Aldermen also heard from Steve Horrell. He lives on East Carroll Street, which is another part of the proposed bike route. Horrell is concerned the street is too narrow to accommodate bike traffic, vehicle traffic, and parking.
Aldermen assured Horrell measurements have been done and the street meets specifications.
The bike route will be four feet wide. The city hopes to mark it this summer or fall. The city wants the bike path to be part of its overall transportation network.
