Keokuk, IA – That giant white tent, currently set up along Keokuk's Main Street, is being moved... but not too far. Ameren UE has been removing soil containing coal-tar residues, left behind by an old manufactured gas plant. The tent stretches about 1 city block and is located between 16th and 18th streets. Spokesperson Mike Cleary says the tent keeps odors from escaping during the clean-up process. He says the tent must now be moved away from the KSB Bank branch facility and toward 18th street as work progresses north. Cleary says about 10,000 tons of material have been removed and the project should be finished by April. He says the goal is to allow for future development of the site.
