Bank Donation Thanks Firefighters

Macomb, IL – The Macomb Fire Department is receiving a big "Thank you" for the work it did to extinguish a smoky fire on the courthouse square.

Citizen's Bank gave the department a check for $10,000. The bank is located next door to the building that burned down on March 3.

The bank's Todd Lester says Citizen's sustained smoke damage but it could have been worse.

"I stood there that night for about five hours and there were multiple times when I thought we may lose the bank," says Lester. "We're very, very fortunate that we have such a great fire department here in Macomb and we really just wanted to acknowledge their efforts."

Lester says ceiling tiles and carpeting in the bank will be replaced because of smoke damage.

Fire Chief Andy Taylor was, of course, excited when he learned about the check.

"If I could still jump like I did 20 years ago I probably could have dunked a basketball," says Taylor. "$10,000 can go a long way."

Taylor says the fire department will take its time deciding how to spend the money. He wants to find something that can be used by all the departments in the region's mutual aid system.

One possibility is to replace a van used to transport personnel and tow trailers. Taylor says the vehicle needs a new transmission but given its age - it's 20 years old - it's probably best to replace it.

Another possibility is to buy a gear extractor, which Taylor says is basically an industrial washing machine built for fire departments.

"It eliminates viruses and bacteria from any blood-borne pathogens and other contaminants that get on our gear or other clothes," says Taylor.

Taylor also says the department lost a few pieces of equipment, including some hose, during the fire. He says it's not unusual to lose or damage equipment during a large fire.
