The gender gap is not unique to corporate salaries or leadership in politics. It’s also very alive in today’s art community.
Western Illinois University Women’s Center Director Janine Cavicchia said that’s led them to host an art show in support and encouragement of female artists.
“For centuries women artists were unrecognized and not encouraged to use their talents and they were discredited," said Cavicchia. "Things have changed some, but still only 5 percent of art currently displayed by museums is by women.”
The Women's Art Exhibit will feature pieces in a variety of mediums by 8 female artists in Macomb will be on display in the Multicultural Center through the end of the month. A meet the artist’s reception is schedule from 4:00-5:30 p.m. Monday in the Multicultural Center on WIU’s campus.
The art exhibit coincides with Women's History Month. WIU's Women's Center has hosted 10 female-only art exhibits over the years since it's founding in 1986.
