Around The Region

West Burlington

The Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission is working on a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy for its region: Des Moines, Henry, Lee & Louisa Counties.

Executive Director Mike Norris says the goal is to create a single plan for housing, economic development, transportation and infrastructure.

He says the commission received more than 300 online surveys and conducted another 60 interviews as part of the public input phase.

Norris says the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy will also help the planning commission apply for state and federal money.

He says the five-year-document should be completed in late August or early September.

Keokuk

Crews have been working at the site of a proposed retail center in Keokuk, but it does not appear they are preparing the Main Street property for development.

A St. Louis-based firm bought three acres of Tolmie Park five years ago.

The city recently sent a letter to Keokuk Development LLC about a number of code violations at the property: dirt piles, overgrown weeks, sewer improvements, and fencing.

The letter dated Nov. 2, 2011 did not spell out potential penalties.

Canton, MO

Culver-Stockton College is accepting applications for its latest “Extreme Dome Makeover.”

The program brings together students, faculty, and community members to do exterior improvements throughout Canton, Missouri.

Several homes will even qualify for the necessary materials to be donated.

Nominations for those projects will be accepted through March 1 or until the qualifying homes are identified.

Extreme Dome Makeover 3 is scheduled for August 18.

Burlington

Sixteen employees of the Burlington School District will take advantage of the latest round of the district’s early retirement program.

The cost to the district is expected to be about $275,000 over two fiscal years.

The move is expected to lower the property tax rate by two cents.
