Appeal Denied for Fort Madison Fight Case

The Iowa Court of Appeals will not reverse the verdict against a man knocked unconscious during a fight outside a Fort Madison bar in February 2013.

Court records show Ronald Vowels, Jr. and another man confronted Troy James.  It prompting a fight between the three outside the bar.

James knocked both men unconscious with one punch each before seeking medical attention for a life-threatening facial wound.

Vowels, Jr. was found guilty willful injury causing serious injury and going armed with intent for stabbing James with a knife before being knocked unconscious.

In a 2-1 vote, the Court of Appeals found sufficient evidence to support the conviction, but it did preserve Vowels, Jr.'s right to claim ineffective counsel at a later date.
