The Iowa State Penitentiary was placed on “restricted movement” following the assault of an unidentified male prison employee at about 7:15 A.M. on Monday, May 19.
Department of Corrections spokesperson Fred Scaletta says the employee suffered bruises to the face and head, but returned to work a short time later.
Scaletta says the employee was trying to get a group of inmates away from a restricted area when one of them assaulted him.
This is the second assault of an Iowa State Penitentiary employee in the last ten days.
On May 12, the prison says a staff member was assaulted by an inmate. Three other employees responded and subdued the offender.
As a result, two employees were sent to Fort Madison Community Hospital for evaluation while the other two were seen by on-site medical personnel.
The prison says another inmate tried to help the staff member during the assault.
