Aldermen Want More Bridge Repair Options

Macomb, IL – Macomb aldermen are contemplating several options for repairing the Franklin Street bridge near Randolph Street. The bridge was damaged a few months ago when a car ran into it. A subsequent inspection uncovered other problems. City Administrator Mike Hays says engineers have offered a handful of repair options ranging in price from $10,000 to $150,000. The cheapest would be to close the bridge to vehicles while leaving it open to pedestrians, but aldermen are not convinced that's the best way to go. They agreed more study needs to be done to determine whether there are more alternatives. The city also needs to find a funding source. Some of the money could come from the half-cent sales tax, which is due to expire in 2008. Aldermen say it's important to extend the tax, though they have not decided when to put the issue before voters.
