Alderman Rips Code Enforcement Efforts

Macomb, IL – Macomb's second ward alderman is furious over what he perceives as a lack of code enforcement in his neighborhood. Ken Zahnle lives near the WIU campus, where numerous students also live. He thinks some landlords are ignoring rules on how many students can live in a house, but adds the landlords have no motivation to obey the law because the city takes no action against them. Zahnle points out that neighborhood residents have raised concerns for the past few months but nothing has been done. Zahnle says it's like the wild west in his neighborhood and warns the problem could spread to other parts of the city. You can listen to Zahnle's comments from Monday evening's committee of the whole meeting by clicking on the audio button above. Mayor Mick Wisslead and city attorney John McMillan can also be heard on the recording.
Wisslead says he will appoint aldermen at-large Chris Senn and Dennis Moon to a committee to deal with the matter and report back to the full city council with recommendations.
