SRC Bond Issue to Boost Reserves

Canton, IL – The Spoon River College Board of Trustees is expected to approve a $3.5 million General Obligation Bond issue during a special meeting May 5 in Canton. The board held a public hearing on the plan during its regular monthly meeting in April.

College President Robert Ritschel says no one from the public spoke during the hearing.

Ritschel says the money will help SRC replenish its reserve fund, which has been hurt by late payments from the state.

Supportive Living Facility Clears Hurdle

Macomb, IL – All taxing bodies in McDonough County have agreed to expand the county's enterprise zone. The Spoon River College Board of Trustees approved the move on April 28. It was the last taxing body to do so.

The zone extension was requested by Laverdiere Construction, which is building the new Grand Prairie Supportive Living facility on Grant Street. It will be a two story, 48 unit property containing five double units and 43 single rooms. It's expected to create 30 full time jobs and will have an annual payroll of roughly $800,000.

Tea Party Rallies Against Presidential Visit

Quincy, IL – Dozens of Tea Party members from Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri turned out for the President's speech in downtown Quincy. They held signs, waved flags, and voiced their opposition near the Oakley-Lindsey Center.

The focus then shifted to a Quincy Tea Party-sponsored rally at the Holiday Inn. More than 300 people turned out for the event.

Organizer Steve McQueen says the turn-out for a weeknight was unbelievable, especially since he says multiple events are being planned and operated at different locations.

President Obama Wraps Up Tour In Quincy, IL

Quincy, IL – People started lining up outside the Oakley-Lindsey Center, late Tuesday evening, to get a ticket for President Obama's speech Wednesday afternoon. Secret Service estimated the crowd, which included elected leaders from the local and state level, at about 2,300.

The crowd started filing in about 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday anticipating the 4:05 P.M. speech. President Obama surprised the crowd by showing up early from his tour of Northeast Missouri and jumped on the stage about 3:45 P.M.

Congressman Touts SEAM Act

Carthage, IL – Congressman Phil Hare (D-IL) said a proposed new bill is designed to create more jobs in the green energy industry.

The measure is called the Security in Energy and Manufacturing Act , or SEAM. Hare said it will provide a 30% credit to companies that manufacture alternative energy equipment such as wind turbines and solar panels.
