Slow Construction Season in McDonough County

Macomb, IL – As the old joke goes, there are two seasons in Illinois: Winter, and Road Construction. While that might not be exactly true, summer is upon us, and with it does indeed come road construction.

While there are many highways and byways that could use attention in McDonough County, county engineer Tom Hickman says there's simply not enough money to take care of all of them.

Pajama Drive In Keokuk & Ft. Madison

Lee County, IA – Wayne Marple with Fort Madison Rotary Club says his organization will join forces with Keokuk Rotary Club to conduct a local pajama drive. He says the goal is to collect 500 brand new pairs.

"We have, right now, almost 100 collected," Marple said, "and that was before the drive event started. Word just got around and people started donating pajamas. I would love to break the 500 barrier."

Macomb, IL – The panelists talk about the images used in news reports and whether certain photos and/or videos should not be shown.

Some news consumers complained about the bodies shown in coverage of the Haiti earthquake. They questioned whether similar photos would be shown if a deadly quake struck in the United States.

Newsrooms often debate whether an image is suitable for the audience. The panelists believe journalists should err on the side of sharing the facts, even if that means showing a disturbing image.

Federal Help for Local Projects

Macomb, IL – It's hoped some federal money will be available to help with the proposed bio-diesel plant in LaHarpe.

Congressman Phil Hare (D-IL) said he's trying to secure both a loan and a grant for the project. He said LaHarpe and the region need the jobs.

"If you go through downtown LaHarpe (you can see) it's almost boarded up," Hare said.

Hare said it's too early to know if federal assistance will be available.

The company Bio Energy hopes to begin construction of the $35 million plant by the end of the year.
